GAME REVIEW: Sheep Collapse (Mystery Sheep)

If there is a genre I love the most, it is fantasy. I can’t get enough of folktales, of bedtime stories, of fables and fairytales. Sheep Collapse is an attention-seeker, simply by having the theme it has. To bring it to light, it a turn-based house-building game for two to four players. Basically, the goal seems easy… to build the biggest house. It should be easy, right? Not! You have the bad wolf to watch out for, so make sure your house is sturdy or else it’s HUFF PUFF AND AWAY for your precious home.

To start off, I’d like to commend this team’s efforts. They also had another game which was interesting for me because of its Fairytale-based theme and fantastic art. I’m surprised they came up with another one! Just like the video game they came up with, this board game is also a carefully crafted, visually appealing product. Even if you don’t know what the heck the game is about, you’d probably want to try playing it for yourself because even the prototype looks so professional! What I like best about the components are the player pieces because they are so cute. There’s a little sheep there, I think he’s named Crazy? I’ve grown quite fond of him after I played the first time. The game board is also wonderful; you can really feel that they are in a field. But is that blood, or flowers on the grass? Nobody knows.

What I can say about gameplay is that it is unique. I don’t think I’ve played a game like this before! It brings out the creativity in you, as you’re free to build your house in any way you want, but you also have to make sure that it’s structurally sound enough to resist the attacks that come every night! It’s also such a thrill, whenever it’s time to grab supplies… it’s truly a race through the fields to get everything you can get your hands on! It’s just so sad when you’re the last player though, because most of the time, supplies aren’t easy for you to obtain anymore. I can suggest something like this: player 1 goes first on the first day, and then player 2 goes first on the second day, player 3 on the third day… and it goes on. That way everyone gets a try on being the first move.

Something I also praise the game for is its potential for wrecking friendships and ruining the experiences of the other players in the game (especially the obvious winners!) You just see how ruthless your best friends can be when it comes to wanting to win. Through experience, when I feel like I’m going to lose anyway, I move the wolf instead and I watch in delight as blocks are taken away and houses are brought back to their base structures. It brings me joy to see their hard-earned work be destroyed with just one flick of a finger!

Thank you for this stunning creation, Mystery Sheep! I feel like the wolf…hungry for more of this game. I am so excited to play it again and again and again. I would recommend this game not only to fairy-tale or animal lovers like I am, but to everyone! I'm pretty sure this can be enjoyed by all audiences. I can't wait to see what's the next thing they come up with.
